New for 2012 (coming in June) is the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 12 and 14. The Mirage Pro Angler 14 is essentially an enhanced version of the original Hobie Pro Angler. The Mirage Pro Angler 12 is a great new addition to the Hobie fishing kayak fleet, in that it offers a smaller more portable version of what I think is the best fishing kayak available. Personally, I find the original Mirage Pro Angler to be a bit much for one person to wrangle, especially if you are transporting your kayak on a roof rack. I applaud Hobie for creating a more lightweight and compact Pro Angler kayak which is sure to quickly devour the fishing kayak market – again.
Selecting the right fishing kayak for you can be overwhelming. So many different kayaks to choose from, each offering it’s own unique list of options and features. For me, the choice to have a Hobie Pro Angler came down to a very simple logic. Only Hobie offers the incredible Mirage Drive system that let’s you manoeuvre virtually hands free. Common sense told me that the purpose of having a fishing kayak was to spend more time fishing, so using my hands for angling rather than fiddling with paddles made total sense.
Sit On Top
Hobie Pro Angler kayaks are SOT (sit on top), and I know some people will argue that there are disadvantages to a sit on top kayak, such as being more exposed to the weather and elements, and while that is a valid point, Hobie does offer optional protective covers as well. Personally, I like the sit on top concept which offers anglers a safe and quick exit option should any serious danger present itself, such as a rouge wave or potential collision with another vessel. Another key advantage to the Hobie Pro Angler being a sit on top kayak is it’s incredible stability. Most anglers will find fishing from a standing position very comfortable, however obviously when in the standing position, you will not be able to utilize the incredible Mirage Drive system.
Mirage Drive System
I recall one of the very first times I used a Hobie fishing kayak, myself and a friend joined another group of kayak anglers, most of them being hardcore ocean kayak fans. As the day progressed, a breeze came on forcing the ocean kayak anglers to either anchor in position or waste fishing time repositioning their kayaks every thirty seconds when they drifted away from their desired fishing spot. Myself and my friend simply gave a few gentle kicks of the Mirage Drive and never missed a cast.
Obviously, I am so passionate about the advantages the Mirage Drive offers anglers who are interested in becoming involved in kayak angling that I created this website to help you make an informed decision.
Well, on Friday we had some family visiting the area (camping) so we all decided to hit a local beach. I figured I'd bring my Pro Angler along to show them however I didn't plan on there being 3 to 5 foot surf! LOL. It seemed like the perfect … [Continue reading]
